Weighing 600 tons per piece with a span of 53 m, a single umbrella shades an area roughly equivalent to half a football field. Eight umbrellas are planned as sunshades for the  for Mecca pilgrims on the piazza of the holy mosque.

These umbrellas are compared to the size filigree and light constructions to keep the structure as light and delicate as possible despite the extremely high static loads. The arm claddings are built of a lightweight composite sandwich structure and decorated with mosaic tiles. When closed, the claddings protect the folded Teflon membrane.
