Vessel Repair

The aim of the PCR composite repair was to restore the structural integrity of 36" vessel with sever metal loss due to high pitting corrosion in multiple positions leading to through-wall defect.

Scope:

  • Composite Repair to reinstate integrity of Vessel.

  • Required repair design pressure 7.7 bar.

  • Required repair design temperature 70°C.

  • Design repair lifetime 7 years.

  • The thickness required for restoring the integrity was engineered in accordance with ISO 24817:2015(E), 8 layers PCR-GX for externally corroded area and 12 layers PCR-GX for through wall defect.

Challenges:

  • Paint removing was the biggest challenge, since Sa 2.5 was not allowed on site, it was done using special PCR paint remover followed by St2 surface preparation prior to composite repair.

  • Precise compression was achieved never the less the complexity of branches coming out of the Vessel.

Actions:

  • Surface preparation was done to Swedish Standard St 2.

  • PCR epoxy adhesive primer was applied on the vessel to enhance the adhesion between substrate and PCR-GX layers.

  • Application of 8 layers PCR-GX for externally corroded area and 12 layers PCR-GX for through wall defect.
