PCT’s Mataf Ceiling project at the Great Mosque of Mecca

Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) is pleased to announce its award win at the Construction Week Awards 2025, taking home the trophy for Offsite Project of the Year for its Mataf Expansion Ceiling project at the Holy Mosque in Mecca, KSA. Winning against some of the Middle East's toughest and most accomplished modular and offsite innovators, this award reinforces PCT's position as a regional leader in advanced composite engineering and turnkey offsite solutions.

The Mataf Ceiling is a central element of the Great Mosque's historic expansion, designed to increase capacity from 770,000 to more than 2.5 million worshippers.    The project required a 216,800 m² decorative composite suspended ceiling that would be both lightweight and structurally robust, while reflecting the cultural and architectural heritage of the Holy Mosque.    The client requested a complete turnkey solution, including offsite fabrication, lightweight long-life materials with accessibility for MEP servicing, strict acoustic performance, compliance with international fire safety standards, and complex aesthetic detailing featuring Arabic calligraphy, multifaceted geometry, UHPC, and agglomerate tiles.

Over the past year alone, PCT has delivered more than 40% of the total ceiling area, completing over 200,000m² to date.    This includes the fabrication of more than 25,000 unique FRP composite panels ranging from 10 m² to 770 m² and weighing 67 kg/m², engineered to significantly reduce the structural load on the building.    Each panel is 70 mm thick and engineered with precise bolted edge flanges to enable fast, accurate installation.

PCT operated nine dedicated factories in Dubai, reaching a peak production rate of 10,000 m² of FRP per month, supported by a streamlined procurement network and a dedicated materials warehouse.    The project pushed the boundaries of sustainability by significantly reducing embodied carbon through lightweight FRP composites, integrating energy-efficient LED lighting, and contributing to the wider clean-energy strategy through large-scale solar installations such as the PV North Bridges (1 MWp) and PV Roof Shooters (316 kWp), which collectively generate more than 2.17 GWh of clean energy annually in support of Saudi Vision 2030.

The core innovation is the prefabricated composite panel itself, a structural core, a high-performance acoustic layer, decorative agglomerate tiles, a highly engineered solution integrating an ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) layer, and an FRP carrier panel.

The Mataf Ceiling has become a benchmark for offsite and modular construction across the Middle East, proving that complex architectural components can be fabricated in controlled environments and rapidly assembled on-site with exceptional accuracy.

PCT's broader role in the Haram Expansion—delivering more than 15 turnkey composite packages totalling 350,000 m²—has accelerated the region's adoption of advanced composites, strengthened local supply chains, and inspired a new generation of sustainable, culturally grounded design.

What sets PCT apart is its seamless end-to-end capability.  The company manages concept design, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, installation, testing, and commissioning under one integrated framework.

The project's timeline highlights PCT's disciplined delivery model. Initial planning for the Great Mosque expansion began in 2008, with the official launch in 2011. Throughout the project, prefabricated panels were produced in Dubai and transported to Mecca for rapid installation, supported by a workforce of more than 3,200 skilled personnel operating in a 24/7 worship environment.

Reflecting on the achievement, Hannes Waimer, Managing Director of PCT, said that “winning Offsite Project of the Year is especially meaningful given the strength of the competition and the cultural significance of the project”.    Amr Azmy, PCT’s Project Director – Haramain Projects, added that “the accomplishment showcases the expertise and dedication of our teams in driving innovation through advanced composites”.

PCT congratulates all finalists. Securing the Offsite Project of the Year award against such high-calibre competition marks a defining moment for the company.    It sets new regional standards for performance, quality, and future-ready construction.
